Ranking of markets issuing in barcelona

Spain, France and United Kingdom are the three major source markets of tourists of the Catalan capital, as reported by Turisme de Barcelona. “The diversity of backgrounds is the great strength of our sector”, according to the City tourism agency.

In total, Barcelona received 7.56 million tourists, distributed among 1.51 million Spanish and 6.05 million foreign. That is, international tourism represents the 80% of travellers who stay in the city.

Reasons of visit, expenditure and average stay

Reasons to visit, tourists who stay in Barcelona can be classified in

  • Professional reasons = 40.9%
  • holiday = 50.6%
  • reasons personal and others = 8.5%

The average in the city stay was 2.17 days.

On the other hand, the expenditure carried out by foreign tourists with credit card increased by 22.3% last year, reaching the figure of € 3,754 million.

“This figure has grown 822% since the year 2000 and shows an increasingly important new markets such as China, Australia, Korea South, United Arab Emirates and the India,” says Turisme de Barcelona.

Precisely, and with the aim of attracting more tourists out of high season, Turisme de Barcelona will intensify this year its shares of promotion on the markets of Asia, Latin America and the Arab countries.
