Las palmas de gran canaria presents its tourist plan


Canary Islands cruises tourism dates back to the 1960’s and later declined by the emergence of other destinations in the Mediterranean. But now the Atlantic route, between Funchal and the Canary is consolidating.

“In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria are receiving nearly 450 000 cruise passengers, in the season of six months, almost without intending it to us and with a spring justito,” explains the Councillor of tourism, Paul Barber.

Therefore, the Port authority shall carry out 2012 works of elongation of the cruiseship dock, “which will allow to receive up to five cruise ships of large tonnage at the same time from October 2012,” says Barber.

According to one study, 33 percent of the cruise passengers already comes with the scheduled trip; another 33% landed on their own and the rest of the passengers at the moment do not fall from the ship. “That kind of tourists also we want”, adds.

City breaks

Explains the Councillor of tourism in the capital of Gran Canaria, “we want that the city will once again attract foreign hotel investments, mainly in historical areas”.

At present, the city has 7,000 hotel beds, “the majority of business and Congress tourism market. And at certain times, more places would require,”says Barber.

“We want to strengthen the segment of city breaks: attract tourists from the Peninsula at the weekend.” We are two hours, but it is worth the effort of the journey. Tourists from the South

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria also wants to attract visitors who spend their holidays in the resorts of the South of the island.

“The three million tourists who receives the South of Gran Canaria every year, we are determined to attract a part of them to the city, by 30%, that would be a million visitors, highlighting our offer of shopping, culture, entertainment, etc”, indicated Pablo Barbero.

“From the South to the capital are only 35 minutes by motorway and sufficient offer of regular transport by coach, taxis and rental cars. These visitors will be also our prescribers tomorrow”concluded.
